7 Tokyo restaurants lasting for more than a century

Ueno District has dozens of old restaurants, like Kyumeido serving snake meat, Yabu Soba noodle shop or Usagiya bakery...



This is a 100-year-old restaurant in Tokyo serving even snake meat. Not many diners dare to try this dish, but snake was previously quite popular because of high protein content. Snake meat is decreasing and becomes really rare, so if you want to try this special food, you can come to Kyumeido.

Tanaka Shokudo


This cozy eatery was built in Showa era (1926-1989). Tanaka Shokudo even offered Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the famous cutlet chops. Tapas and cocktails are also favored by many customers. The restaurant is quite crowded so there will be times you have to queue for a while. It servers from noon to evening.

This is a famous bakery in Japan since 1913, attracting visitors by soft aromatic bean cakes Dorayaki. If you want to drink tea while enjoying their cakes, remember to reserve because otherwise, you will probably have to wait.

Yabu Soba


If you are looking for a long-standing soba shop in Tokyo, Yabu Soba is a place not to be missed. The eatery began selling soba in 1892, and almost everyone in Ueno knows its reputation. A small note for you: soba will be even better when served with Japanese liquor.

Besides, Tanaka Shokudo, diners can also enjoy delicious cutlet in Horaiya - a long-standing restaurant in Ueno. This is the first restaurant to use pork meat instead of pork ribs to make cutlet. The road to the restaurant look like taking you back to the past, with small alleys and lovely houses built in old architecture. The signboard of Horaiya is not standout, so visitors have to look very closely.

Toriei restaurant is located near Shinobazu, has been opening since 1909. After over a century, the restaurant still exists and is most known for its tasty chicken hot pot. Because it is always too crowded, booking in Toriei is not easy at all. If you get a chance to eat here, you should definitely try Shamo soup.

Everyone can cook Oden or buy it from convenience stores, but it will be way better if you go to Takokyu. Oden is a traditional dish of the Japanese on winter days. Takokyu has been serving since 1904 and today it is still famous for hot Oden.
